Kava is both a plant and beverage native throughout the south Pacific. The kava drink is derived from the roots of Piper Methysticum, which translates to "intoxicating pepper." Kava has been drank in the south Pacific for thousands of years as a ceremonial and spiritual drink. In south Pacific cultures, where kava is abundant, kava drinking also took its place as a recreational pastime.
In Vanuatu, where kava is believed to have originated, kava is drank in a nakamal. The nakamal is the hut in the village where any man can come make, drink, and share kava.
